Paul Cooper's Advent Beer Calendar

I walked into the office on Wednesday and received a wonderful surprise. What? The 2008 Advent beer Calendar from (Thanks Charlie and Marilyn). Paul Cooper is a fellow Anglican Priest here in the Episcopal Diocese of Pittsburgh. After opening my calendar, all I can say is WOW! I quickly took the carefully numbered beers and placed them in a vintage Canada Dry Case where they now will live in cold storage in my unheated workshop for the next 24 days.
2008 Beer Guide - click dates above

Paul says,
This year's inspiration for selection was diverse beer styles. Some people may think "beer is beer," but those people are in the dark and amateur. There's a huge difference between lagers and ales and porters and wee heavies and bocks and pilsners and helles and dunkles and on and on. This year's selections will expose you to twenty-four excellent samples of different brewing styles.

Feedback or questions are welcomed at And let us never forget the reason for Advent, and the One whose appearing we eagerly await, and for whom we always keep watch. Cheers!

The Irreducible 80's: A List

It seems that after a little bit of deliberation, there are 265 irreducible songs of the 1980's (lol). There were just too many great songs to make top ten lists for each year, so I just grabbed every song for the decade that I seemed irreducible (at the time). There are whole albums (from Tracy Chapman, GNR, 10,000 maniaces, U2, R.E.M, Peter Gabriel, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Cult, Bruce Springsteen, Edie Brickell, Indigo Girls, Tom Waits, The Clash, The B-52's,etc.) where everytrack could have been listed. The Music Genome Project®

A couple weeks ago, my friend Rachel Myers, suggested I check out Pandora Radio. She said it was part of the Music Genome Project, an effort to get to the heart of what makes a song a song. Sounded cool. So, I checked it out. Pandora Radio allows the listner to build stations based on their music tastes. Yestardey I built a station called sweat and grit (Tom Waits, Brice Springsteen, John Hammond, Jonny Cash, etc.) and a station called Indie Christian Bands (Adma Again, Mewithoutyou, Larry Norman). The station is really cool. Everyone in our family has been able to build (or have built) a station. As long as you do not want 90's music or billboard songs, you should really like it. Check out Pandora Radio

From the Folks at the Genome Project
On January 6, 2000 a group of musicians and music-loving technologists came together with the idea of creating the most comprehensive analysis of music ever.

Together we set out to capture the essence of music at the most fundamental level. We ended up assembling literally hundreds of musical attributes or "genes" into a very large Music Genome. Taken together these genes capture the unique and magical musical identity of a song - everything from melody, harmony and rhythm, to instrumentation, orchestration, arrangement, lyrics, and of course the rich world of singing and vocal harmony. It's not about what a band looks like, or what genre they supposedly belong to, or about who buys their records - it's about what each individual song sounds like.

Since we started back in 2000, we've carefully listened to the songs of tens of thousands of different artists - ranging from popular to obscure - and analyzed the musical qualities of each song one attribute at a time. This work continues each and every day as we endeavor to include all the great new stuff coming out of studios, clubs and garages around the world.

It has been quite an adventure, you could say a little crazy - but now that we've created this extraordinary collection of music analysis, we think we can help be your guide as you explore your favorite parts of the music universe.

We hope you enjoy the journey.

Sonseed: Jesus is My Friend

Sal and the gang from Sonseed are taking over YouTube these days. Early on, some folks doubted the validity of Sonseed, but the 80's Skaish Catholic Pop Band from Brooklyn are definitely the real deal. So 80's Christian that it is not even funny. Thnaks to Doug from Dougspoloitation for getting this from VHS to Digital and onto Youube. There is no kitsch like Christian kitsch:
